In this blog post, I’m sharing my honest review of the Maligne Lake Cruise experience and all our tips for your unforgettable visit, including more activities in the area besides the cruise. The Canadian Rockies have been known for their stunning alpine lakes in all shades of blue and green. And while there are many lakes in Jasper National Park, Maligne Lake is undoubtedly the most popular. Stretching for 22 km, Maligne Lake is the longest natural lake in the Canadian Rockies, and the most comfortable way to explore is on a Maligne Lake Cruise. Guided fishing tours are also available, along with canoe and kayak rentals, hiking trails, afternoon tea at the historic Maligne Lake Chalet, and dining at The View restaurant.

Jasper Downtown Hostel (Budget Backpackers)
Fully narrated cruise takes you along Maligne Lake to Spirit Island in Jasper National Park. Enjoy views of the Canadian Rockies, Spirit Island, and sprawling forests.
Classic Boat Cruise: 1.5 hours
The first step to making sure you get the best deals is to join the cruise line’s email list. Once you’ve signed up, you’ll receive regular updates on all the latest offers, like deals by destination, kids sail free promotions and flash sales. If you can be flexible when it comes to your travel dates, you’ll have your pick of unbeatable savings.
Hiking Trails, Picnic Spots, and Other Recreational Activities Nearby
E.g. if you have rented for 1 hour and arrive 15 minutes late, then you will have 45 minutes remaining. There are plenty of ways to get more bang for your buck when you sail on a Royal Caribbean cruise. Add a Specialty Beverage Package — which includes unlimited alcoholic beverages, soda, and more — and your experience is as close to all-inclusive as it gets. And with so many complimentary shows and attractions onboard, you can easily fill every sea day without spending a single dollar extra. Car rental in Canada isn’t super cheap, but it isn’t overly expensive either, especially if you get a budget car. The cheapest car with pickup and drop-off in different locations is around $100 CAD per day.
The Spirit Behind the Lake
The classic Maligne Lake Cruise, the most popular option, lasts approximately 1.5 hours. During this time, you’ll explore the lake’s history and have 15 minutes on shore to check out the famous Spirit Island. The Maligne Lake Cruise is a unique sightseeing tour exploring Maligne Lake, home to the world-famous Spirit Island in Jasper National Park. For all that you get to see, this tour is super affordable at only $154 CAD including the boat cruise and hotel pickup and drop-off, which is really convenient. You can also book a cheaper tour if you substitute the cruise with a guided hike along the Mary Schaeffer Loop. Book online here with the option for free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance.
What are the best tours to Maligne Lake that include the cruise?
If you are not there when the cruise departs, your seat is subject to being given up. There is a waiting list for the cruise and peak times are booked well in advance. A $25 fee may apply to late passengers that have to be rebooked. Embark on a scenic 14-kilometer journey across Maligne Lake until you reach the serene and captivating Spirit Island.
Premium Boat Cruise: 2 hours
Although you can use public transport, on some occasions, it means your trip will not only require more time but more planning. I love this lake for its shockingly blue waters and gorgeous mountain backdrop, and I’m sure you will, too! While there are many ways you can take in the incredible views around the lake, one of my favorite ways to experience its beauty is to take a cruise across the calm waters. During the cruise, there will be a guide to tell you about the lake, its history, and its importance to the area. You’ll learn a bit about the Stoney Nakoda and the cultural significance Maligne Lake plays to them. There’s plenty of time to take in the views, and stepping outside the covered boat is possible to get some fresh air as you’re cruising.

Maligne Lake is one of the most popular recreational areas in Jasper National Park. There are plenty of great trails for hiking all around this beautiful area. In addition to these, you can also rent canoes, rowboats and kayaks, or visit the Maligne Lake Cruise for an interpretive voyage across the lake.
Where to Stay in Jasper to visit Maligne Lake
A Parks Canada Discovery Pass grants you entrance to all Parks Canada destinations for a year. For many visitors, purchasing an annual pass makes more sense, as an adult’s day pass is $11.00 per day. The pass also grants access to historic sites such as Cave & Basin along with any other national park in the country. Many visitors to the Rockies can only choose so many paid experiences like this.
Spirit Island – When most people visit Maligne Lake, it’s to visit Spirit Island. It’s only accessible by boat, so this cruise is one of your only ways to get here! When you take this lake cruise, you’ll get to spend time walking around the island and experiencing the picture-perfect views. While enjoying the lake from its shores is gratifying enough, there’s another way to experience this water. Enjoying a Maligne Lake cruise is on many visitors Jasper bucket lists. But what can you expect from your time on the water, just how much is the tour, and what’s all this fuss about Spirit Island?
Still, the boats are covered, and guests can step outside whenever they wish. The whole Maligne Lake and Spirit Island experience is kid-friendly, and kids under 5 are free, though strollers are not permitted on the boat. The cruise is run by Pursuit Adventures, the same folks who run the Lake Minnewanka Cruise in Banff, the Banff Gondola, Jasper Skywalk, and the Athabasca Glacier Experience. Maligne Lake is the largest natural lake in the Canadian Rockies, stretching over 22 km.
Our cruises, along with kayak, canoe and rowboat rentals, allow visitors to connect to this special place in their own way. Join us and experience the magic of Maligne Lake for yourself. We will hold pre-booked rentals for up to 15 minutes beyond the scheduled rental time. After this, the rental will no longer be reserved for you and will be open to walk-in customers. Please note that if you arrive late, the amount of time is factored into your rental duration.
You also have a higher chance of seeing wildlife on Maligne Lake Road when driving to Maligne Lake. However, a short trail through the trees with a perfect view of Spirit Island exists. The place is as magical as I imagined, and it’s one of my top recommendations for the best things to do in Jasper. We could spend 15 minutes on shore, which is plenty for a walk, lots of photos, and taking the views in. Enjoy all the same inclusions of our Classic Cruise with additional time near Spirit Island. Our Premium Cruise also offers more time to soak in Maligne’s beautiful scenery, more chances to spot wildlife and exclusive special features not offered on any other tour.
A member of our team will respond within 24 hours (weekdays) and 48 hours (weekends). Discover top natural attractions such as Maligne Canyon and Medicine Lake on foot, and enjoy a scenic cruise on Maligne Lake. You will need to pre-purchase a national park fishing license, prior to arriving at the lake. Unfortunately, for safety reasons, we are unable to accommodate strollers on our boats.
